As dentists, our priority is to always preserve your natural teeth and smile. We are trained to look at every possible option that can save your natural teeth and tooth extractions are only carried out as the absolute last resort.

However, sometimes extracting decayed or damaged teeth is the only way to relieve your pain and stop the spread of infection that could damage the surrounding teeth if left unchecked.

According to his oath as an oral surgeon, Dr Cameron takes every precaution necessary to ensure that every tooth extraction is painless and free of any discomfort to the patient. His patients also applaud him greatly for the delicate and patience-filled post-op care he provides to ensure no patient goes home unhappy with the service he has received.

Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

The Tooth Extraction Process Here at Smile Lab Union Square

Here at Smile Lab in Union Square, Manhattan we take every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of our patients, and to ensure that every tooth extraction is painless and free of undue complications. We’re also incredibly transparent with our patients about every step in the process.

In fact, in the spirit of transparency, here’s a closer look into Dr. Cameron’s precise and specialized process for performing tooth extractions.

Initial Examination and Treatment Plan

We begin with a thorough examination of the mouth to isolate the teeth that need extraction. This may require an X-ray or 3D imaging. The X-ray results will help Dr. Cameron decide if you require simple extraction or surgical extraction. Your treatment plan will then be shared with you in its entirety.

Depending on how deep your teeth are lodged into your gums, Dr Cameron may just apply local anesthesia to the surrounding area or fully sedate you with laughing gas. In case he chooses the sedative option, an injection will be inserted into one of the veins in your arm to administer the sedative.
Depending on the type of extraction you need, extra tissue and bone may be removed to get access to the underlying tooth. A small incision may also be made in your gums to get easier access to the tooth.

Finally, Dr Cameron will use an elevator and forceps to slowly loosen and ease out your tooth from its place.

Immediately after the procedure, the patient may be given gauze to bite down on to help in developing a blood clot. You’ll also be advised to not spit, smoke, or use a straw while drinking so that the blood clot can develop without interruptions.

Don't Put It Off Any Longer.

A tooth that needs extracting won’t get better on its own — and the longer it’s left, the higher the risk of infection spreading to surrounding teeth and bone. Book your consultation at Smile Lab Dentistry today and get a clear answer and a clear plan, fast.

Signs You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

These symptoms don’t always mean a tooth needs to come out — but they do mean you need to get checked before the problem gets worse.

Severe or Persistent Tooth Pain

A toothache that won’t go away — especially one that intensifies when you bite down, apply pressure, or eat hot and cold foods — is one of the most common reasons patients end up needing an extraction. Persistent tooth pain is rarely a sign of something minor. It often indicates deep decay, infection, or a cracked tooth that has reached the nerve. If over-the-counter pain relief is the only thing keeping you functional, it’s time to call Smile Lab Dentistry and get it looked at today.

When decay has destroyed too much of a tooth’s structure — or a break or crack extends too far below the gumline — a filling, crown, or root canal may no longer be a viable option. At that point, extraction is often the safest and most effective way to eliminate the source of infection, protect surrounding teeth, and set the stage for a permanent replacement like a dental implant. Dr. Marcello will always explore every option to save the tooth first — but when extraction is the right call, he’ll tell you clearly and honestly.
A dental abscess — a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the surrounding gum — is a serious dental emergency that requires immediate attention. Signs include throbbing pain, visible swelling in the gum or jaw, a bad taste in the mouth, and in some cases fever. If the infection is too advanced to be resolved with antibiotics or a root canal, extraction is necessary to remove the source of infection before it spreads to surrounding teeth, the jawbone, or beyond. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms right now, call Smile Lab Dentistry at 332-237-6453 immediately.

Comfort Focused Tooth Extractions in Manhattan

Tooth extractions are incredibly delicate procedures that some dental clinics just straight-up refuse to perform due to the risks associated. They require an expert’s hand to ensure that the operation doesn’t end up causing even more pain and discomfort. Also to ensure that it doesn’t end up causing irreversible damage to your jaw bone or gums, resulting in the need for an even pricier and riskier surgical operation in the future.

Dr. Cameron Lewis here at Smile Lab in Union Square, Manhattan has been a practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon for over a decade. He got his doctorate in dental surgery from the Howard University College of Dentistry back in 2007.  He continued his practice by gaining oral and maxillofacial surgery internships at the New York Medical College and Jacobi Medical Center.

But his greatest achievement yet is performing hundreds of successful tooth extractions despite complications for satisfied patients who remain connected with Smile Lab, NYC to this day.

So, rest assured if you do pick us to perform your tooth extraction, you’ll be in very experienced and capable hands.

I love this office! Everyone is so kind and Dr Basseri is so kind + good at explaining things. He is the most knowledgeable dentist I’ve found on TMJ and has been great all around.

I've seen lots of different dentists over the years as my insurance has changed or I've moved. Smile Lab is the first place where I feel like they really care about me. I had some rough cavities filled and was nervous because of a previous bad experience. The dentist here had no problem giving me breaks or extra medicine when I needed it. He even gave my jaw a massage when I could close my mouth again! I'll definitely trust Smile Lab with my future dental care.

Office is in an awesome location. Right off the F train on freaking Broadway! You enter and are greeted professionally, the staff are all really nice and the whole office is squeaky clean. Dr. Waise has great bedside manner, easy going but very knowledgeable. Ive been having headaches for 8 years and within 5 minutes of meeting me he explained to me the neck and jaw issues that come from posture, recommended a solution and even loosened up some of the sore muscles in my jaw! Cleaning was great, everything was transparent and nobody hassled me for anything. Ill be coming back, for a filling, a cleaning even if its only for a jaw massage!

Ive been scared of the dentist my whole life, and truthfully it had been years since I had been to one, then I had horrible jaw pain and decided to go to smile lab. Dr. E and the team were phenomenal, and I've recommended them to everyone I know. Thank you for the painless, speedy, and kind help!

Common Questions About Tooth Extraction in Manhattan

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Manhattan?
The cost of a tooth extraction in Manhattan varies depending on whether the tooth is a simple extraction or a more complex surgical removal, the location of the tooth, and your insurance coverage. Simple extractions typically range from $150 to $300, while surgical extractions can range higher depending on complexity. The most accurate way to get a real number for your specific situation is to come in — Smile Lab Dentistry offers consultations where Dr. Marcello will examine your tooth, explain exactly what the procedure involves, and give you a transparent cost breakdown with no surprises. Most major insurance accepted. Flexible payment options available.

For the first 24 hours after your extraction, stick to soft, cool foods — think yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and ice cream. Avoid anything hot, hard, crunchy, or chewy that could disturb the blood clot forming in the extraction site. Over the following days you can gradually reintroduce softer solid foods as comfort allows. Most patients are back to eating normally within a week. Dr. Marcello will provide you with a full list of dietary guidelines at your appointment so you know exactly what to expect during recovery.

Keep the gauze pad placed over your extraction site firmly in place for at least 30 to 45 minutes after your procedure. This pressure helps form the blood clot essential for proper healing. If bleeding continues after removing the first piece of gauze, replace it with a fresh piece and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. Avoid changing the gauze too frequently as this can disrupt clot formation. If significant bleeding continues beyond a few hours, contact Smile Lab Dentistry at 332-237-6453 right away.

A straightforward simple extraction at Smile Lab Dentistry typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes from the time anesthesia is administered to the time you’re done. More complex surgical extractions — involving impacted teeth or teeth broken at the gumline — may take longer depending on the complexity of your specific case. Dr. Marcello will give you a realistic time estimate during your consultation so you can plan your day accordingly. Most patients are genuinely surprised by how quickly it’s over.

Smile Lab Dentistry in Union Square is one of Manhattan’s most trusted and highly-rated practices for tooth extractions. Call 332-237-6453 to book your consultation today.

It’s best to avoid soda for at least 48 to 72 hours after your tooth extraction — and ideally for the full first week. The carbonation in fizzy drinks can break down the blood clot in the extraction socket, significantly increasing your risk of dry socket — a painful condition where the clot is lost before the wound has healed. When you do reintroduce soda, avoid using a straw — the suction puts the same pressure on the clot as carbonation and should be avoided for the entire first week of recovery.
Avoid using mouthwash — including alcohol-free rinses — for the first 24 hours after your extraction. During this critical window, the goal is to protect the blood clot forming in the socket, and rinsing too soon can dislodge it. After the first 24 hours, Dr. Marcello will typically recommend gently rinsing with warm salt water — one of the most effective and safest ways to keep the extraction site clean while it heals. Hold off on returning to your regular mouthwash until your follow-up confirms the site is healing properly.
