What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ/TMD refers to a group of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint, the hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull. This joint plays a crucial role in your ability to chew, speak, and yawn. When the temporomandibular joint becomes dysfunctional, it can cause significant pain and discomfort, not only in the jaw but also in the face, neck, shoulders, and even down into the arms and fingers.

TMJ disorders can arise from various factors, including:

Common TMJ/TMD Symptoms

Jaw Pain & Jaw Clicking

One of the most recognizable signs of TMJ/TMD is persistent jaw pain — often accompanied by a clicking, popping, or grinding sound when you open or close your mouth. If your jaw feels stiff, locked, or sore in the morning, it’s time to get evaluated.

Frequent headaches — especially tension headaches around the temples — are a commonly overlooked symptom of TMJ disorder. The strain placed on the temporomandibular joint can radiate pain through the skull, often mimicking migraine symptoms.
TMJ/TMD pain rarely stays in one place. Many patients experience radiating discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and ears — including ear congestion or ringing (tinnitus) — all stemming from a misaligned or overworked jaw joint.

Unconsciously grinding or clenching your teeth — especially at night — is both a symptom and a cause of TMJ/TMD. Bruxism puts enormous pressure on the jaw joint and can lead to worn enamel, cracked teeth, and worsening jaw pain over time.

Still Not Sure If It's TMJ?

You don’t have to keep guessing — or living with the pain. A quick evaluation at Smile Lab can tell you exactly what’s going on and what it’ll take to fix it. Most patients leave their first visit with a clear diagnosis and a plan.

  • Clear Aligners: Correcting misaligned teeth or jaws to improve bite function.
  • Medication: Pain relievers or muscle relaxants to manage symptoms.

What Patients Say About Their TMJ Treatment

I love this office! Everyone is so kind and Dr Basseri is so kind + good at explaining things. He is the most knowledgeable dentist I’ve found on TMJ and has been great all around.

I've seen lots of different dentists over the years as my insurance has changed or I've moved. Smile Lab is the first place where I feel like they really care about me. I had some rough cavities filled and was nervous because of a previous bad experience. The dentist here had no problem giving me breaks or extra medicine when I needed it. He even gave my jaw a massage when I could close my mouth again! I'll definitely trust Smile Lab with my future dental care.

Office is in an awesome location. Right off the F train on freaking Broadway! You enter and are greeted professionally, the staff are all really nice and the whole office is squeaky clean. Dr. Waise has great bedside manner, easy going but very knowledgeable. Ive been having headaches for 8 years and within 5 minutes of meeting me he explained to me the neck and jaw issues that come from posture, recommended a solution and even loosened up some of the sore muscles in my jaw! Cleaning was great, everything was transparent and nobody hassled me for anything. Ill be coming back, for a filling, a cleaning even if its only for a jaw massage!

Ive been scared of the dentist my whole life, and truthfully it had been years since I had been to one, then I had horrible jaw pain and decided to go to smile lab. Dr. E and the team were phenomenal, and I've recommended them to everyone I know. Thank you for the painless, speedy, and kind help!

Questions About TMJ Treatment in Manhattan

What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint — the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull, just in front of each ear. When people say they “have TMJ,” they’re usually referring to TMJ disorder (also called TMD), a condition where this joint becomes inflamed, misaligned, or overworked. It can cause pain in the jaw, face, neck, and head, and make everyday activities like chewing, speaking, and yawning uncomfortable or even painful.

The right long-term solution depends on what’s causing your TMJ in the first place. For many patients, a combination of a custom oral appliance (night guard), bite correction, and targeted physical therapy can eliminate symptoms for good. In cases driven by teeth misalignment, orthodontic treatment may resolve the root issue entirely. While not every case is “curable” in the traditional sense, most patients achieve lasting, significant relief with the right personalized treatment plan — which is exactly what we build for every patient at Smile Lab.

It varies. Mild TMJ flare-ups caused by stress or short-term jaw strain can resolve within a few weeks. However, untreated or chronic TMJ disorder can persist for months or years and tends to worsen over time. The sooner you seek an evaluation, the better your chances of a faster recovery and avoiding long-term joint damage.

For immediate relief, applying a warm or cold compress to the jaw, eating soft foods, and avoiding wide mouth movements can help reduce discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relievers or muscle relaxants may offer short-term relief. For more lasting results, professional options like custom night guards, Botox injections to relax the jaw muscles, physical therapy, and stress management techniques are highly effective. Don’t rely on home remedies alone — chronic TMJ pain is a signal that something needs to be addressed at the source.

Yes — impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth can shift surrounding teeth and alter your bite, which puts uneven pressure on the temporomandibular joint. This added strain can trigger or worsen TMJ symptoms. If you’re experiencing jaw pain around the time your wisdom teeth are coming in, it’s worth having both evaluated together.
Common signs include jaw pain or soreness, a clicking or popping sound when opening your mouth, headaches near the temples, ear pain or fullness, neck and shoulder tension, and difficulty fully opening or closing your jaw. If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms regularly, a professional TMJ evaluation is the most reliable way to get a definitive answer. Self-diagnosing based on symptoms alone can miss other underlying conditions that require different treatment.

Absolutely. The muscles and nerves surrounding the temporomandibular joint are closely connected to those in your neck and shoulders. When the jaw joint is under stress, that tension often radiates downward, leading to stiffness, soreness, or chronic pain in the neck and upper back. Many patients are surprised to learn their neck pain is rooted in a jaw issue — and find significant relief once their TMJ is treated.
