Who’s a Good Candidate for Dental Crown Treatment

Dental crowns are an excellent choice for teeth restoration. They’re durable, look like natural teeth, and can last up to 20 years at a time.

Dr. Aileen and her team recommend dental crowns over fillings for tooth restoration since crowns are a less painful and more permanent solution.

They’re not just for restoring damaged or decayed teeth either. Dental crowns are a great solution for patients with cosmetic issues that include:

Dental Crown Manhattan

It’s natural for teeth to accumulate damage and decay over time. However, there comes a time when teeth need to be shielded from daily wear and tear to repair themselves and restore their strength, shape, and size.

Dental crown treatment does just that, offering a permanent restorative solution that sees a porcelain or zirconia crown affixed on top of the damaged tooth with an adhesive to protect it from further damage and decay.

At Smile Lab, Manhattan, this delicate restorative procedure is carried out by Dr. Aileen Zaydel and her team. Depending on the patient’s responsiveness, Dr. Aileen’s motto is to always be proactive instead of reactive.

That is why she’ll often order a dental crown to be put in when a fracture is anticipated instead of waiting for your tooth to reach its breaking point. She’s also a perfectionist when it comes to matching the color and texture of the crown with your natural teeth.

Rest assured, you will be in good hands here at Smile Lab in Union Square.

Benefits of a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are reputed to be the ultimate dental restoration solution, and for good reason.
Here are some of the benefits you can expect after the successful placement of a dental crown.
Protect & Strengthen a Damaged Tooth

A dental crown covers and reinforces teeth weakened by decay, large fillings, or root canal treatment — restoring strength and preventing further damage.

Restore Shape, Function & Comfort

Crowns rebuild your tooth’s original size and structure so you can bite, chew, and smile comfortably again — without sensitivity or instability.

Long-Lasting, Natural-Looking Results

Modern crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth and can last 10–15 years or longer with proper care — giving you durability and confidence.

Smile Lab’s Dental Crown Procedure

Here at Smile Lab Dentistry Union Square, NYC, we take every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of our patients by being transparent with them about every step of the process.

In fact, in the spirit of transparency, let us share with you Dr. Aileen’s precise dental crown procedure.

Initial Evaluation and Examination

We begin by conducting a full and thorough examination of your mouth, especially around the surrounding area of the affected tooth. This may include X-rays and 3D imaging as well, free of cost, of course. Then, Dr. Aileen will create a personalized treatment plan for your dental crown insertion.

The affected tooth and surrounding area are cleaned before the start of the procedure. Dr. Aileen may also order a root canal with one of our endodontists, depending on the condition of your tooth.

Excess enamel is shaved off your tooth to ensure that your tooth can fit into your crown. Local anesthesia is applied before the shaping begins.

A paste is applied over the affected tooth to create an impression that can be sent to the lab for the creation of your permanent crown. The lab usually takes two weeks to fabricate the permanent crown. In the meantime, you’re fitted with a temporary metal or porcelain crown and asked to come into the office again after two weeks.

When you come in for your second visit, Dr. Aileen will remove your temporary crown and fit your tooth with the newly created permanent crown. The crown will be fixed into place with dental cement, and you’ll walk away with a brand-new, natural-looking crown on top of your damaged tooth.

Dental Crown Experts You Can Trust

Dental crowns are great for tooth restoration, but complications can occur during the procedure. For example, the crown after being created in the lab may not match the color and texture of your other teeth. Also, there could be complications during the placement process, which may require surgical intervention.

To avoid complications, you need a dentist who’s extensively experienced in conducting dental crown placements, can think on her feet, and can recognize differences in color between the crown and the natural teeth before placement.

Here at Smile Lab in Union Square, Manhattan, Dr. Aileen Zaydel has been performing dental crown placements for over a decade and has hundreds of satisfied patients who remain connected with Smile Lab NYC to this day. She has extensive experience with dental crowns, ensuring a perfect match in color and size combining a comfortable experience with natural-looking results.

Your Questions, Answered

What is a dental crown and when do I need one?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. You may need a dental crown if you have a severely cracked or broken tooth, a tooth with a large cavity that can’t be restored with a filling, a tooth that has undergone a root canal, or a tooth that is badly worn down. Your dentist will recommend a crown after a thorough examination to determine if it’s the best solution for your situation.

With proper care, dental crowns typically last between 10 and 15 years. However, many crowns last significantly longer — sometimes 25 to 30 years — depending on the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and lifestyle factors like grinding your teeth or chewing hard foods. Routine dental check-ups and cleanings at Smile Lab NY will help maximize the lifespan of your crown.

Dental crowns can be made from several different materials, each with their own advantages. The most common options include porcelain or ceramic crowns, which are the most natural-looking and ideal for front teeth; porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, which offer a balance of strength and aesthetics; and full metal or gold crowns, which are extremely durable and best suited for back molars. During your consultation, your dentist will recommend the best material based on the location of the tooth and your personal preferences.

The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the treatment. Some patients experience mild sensitivity or discomfort in the days following the procedure, particularly when eating hot or cold foods, but this typically subsides quickly. If you experience prolonged pain or discomfort after your crown is placed, it’s important to contact your dentist right away.
