What is Deep Cleaning of Teeth?

Deep dental cleaning, also known as Scaling and Root Planing, is a critical treatment for combating gum disease.

A deep cleaning is necessary when gum pockets—the spaces between your teeth and gums—exceed 4 millimeters in depth. This condition is often accompanied by significant plaque buildup, persistent gum bleeding, and inflammation, making a deep cleaning vital for restoring gum health and preventing further complications.

The procedure itself is non-invasive since it doesn’t usually require surgery. It consists of two individual treatments:

  • Scaling: A technique used to remove plaque and tartar buildup above and beyond the gum line to ultimately remove the bacteria in and around the tooth root.
  • Root Planing: A technique used to smooth the rough spots that form on the surface of the root area to make it more difficult for bacteria to latch on.

Here at Smile Lab in Union Square, Dr. Anastasiya Guzchenko is in charge of our periodontal (gum) therapy team. Her motto is simple: To be proactive rather than reactive.

She’ll constantly conduct oral exams on all her patients to evaluate if there’s any extensive bleeding or inflammation in the gums that could be a sign of gum disease. And she’ll schedule a deep cleaning immediately if she manages to detect even a small sign of gum deterioration.

Rest assured, you’ll be in good hands with her team.

Why is Deep Cleaning for Teeth Necessary?

Periodontal or gum disease may seem harmless at first because of how painless it feels when you brush your teeth. But over time, it can cause the pockets between successive teeth to widen, resulting in more and more tartar getting trapped in between them. Which ultimately leads to the buildup of bacteria in your gums and near the roots of your teeth.

If left untouched, these bacteria can trigger a more severe version of gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis.

As time progresses, this disease may cause your gums to fail completely, which can adversely affect the structure surrounding your tooth, including the bone. Eventually leading to tooth loss.

Deep cleaning helps rid your gum pockets of tartar and plaque while smoothing over the surface of your tooth root, preventing harmful bacteria from gaining a foothold within your gums or your roots.

Smile Lab’s Process of Deep Cleaning Teeth in Manhattan

Here at Smile Lab in Union Square, Manhattan, we take every precaution necessary to ensure that we prioritize the safety of our patients. We also pride ourselves on being very transparent with our patients about every step in our process. So, in the spirit of transparency, let us share with you Dr. Anastasiya’s precise process for deep dental cleaning:

Initial Evaluation and Examination

Dr. Anastasiya begins by conducting a thorough examination of your mouth, including the tooth roots and gums surrounding the affected teeth. She may even send you in for a digital X-ray or 3D imaging to get a better look at the bone density around your teeth to give her team clear insight into your oral health.

Once she confirms that you will indeed need a deep cleaning to get rid of the tartar. She will ask you to choose between general anesthetic, which will knock you out completely, and local anesthetic, which will numb the area around the affected tooth. Your decision may impact the total cost you have to pay.

After the anesthetic is administered, Dr. Anastasiya will begin the scaling process by using special instruments known as scalers to manually scrape off tartar from within your widened gum pockets. In some cases, she may even use an ultrasonic device with vibrating tips and a water spray to flush out some debris.

She will then use specialized instruments to smooth out the surface of your tooth roots to eliminate any rough surfaces that bacteria can use to cling to your roots. Smoothening these surfaces helps your gums heal and eventually reattach to your teeth, reducing gum pocket depth over time.

You’re bound to feel some sensitivity and pain around the affected area for the next day or two. However, Dr. Anastasiya will most likely prescribe some antibiotics or anti-microbial mouth wash to help ease your pain.

Your Questions, Answered

How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?

Common signs that you may need a deep cleaning include bleeding or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, gum pockets deeper than 4 millimeters, or visible tartar buildup along the gumline. The best way to know for sure is to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Anastasiya, who will conduct a thorough examination and only recommend a deep cleaning if it’s truly necessary.

At Smile Lab Dentistry, your comfort is the priority. Local or general anesthetic is administered before the procedure begins, so you should feel little to no pain during treatment. Some mild sensitivity and soreness in the days following is normal, and Dr. Anastasiya will provide aftercare instructions — and prescribe antibiotics or antimicrobial mouthwash if needed — to keep you comfortable during recovery.

At Smile Lab Dentistry, deep cleaning is typically completed over two consecutive appointments. The first visit covers your initial evaluation and the scaling procedure, where tartar and plaque are carefully removed from your gum pockets. You return the following day for root planing, where the surfaces of your tooth roots are smoothed to prevent bacteria from reattaching.

The cost of a deep cleaning in Manhattan varies depending on the severity of your gum disease and how much of the mouth requires treatment. Smile Lab Dentistry offers transparent pricing and will walk you through all costs and available payment options during your consultation — with no surprises. Book a free evaluation today to get a clear picture of what your treatment will involve.
